CleanSpace vs Vapor Barrier

Crawl spaces in Arkansas are going to hold moisture. Through the years, homeowners have come up with all kinds of inventive ways to prevent that moisture from damaging their home, sometimes causing more problems. We have seen people vent their clothes dryers into the crawl space, install fans, open their vents in the summer only to close them in the winter, and install so called “vapor barriers”.

Traditional vapor barriers are typically thin sheets of plastic available at your local hardware store. They are relatively inexpensive, making them a popular choice for builders and homeowners. Vapor barriers are supposed to be a vapor diffusion inhibitor, meaning they slow the progression of moisture into the crawl space. However, vapor barriers are not made to last. The thin material can bunch, tear, get punctured, and be blown around by the wind coming through the vents. Once any of these things happen, your crawl space and your home are subject the damages caused by water and moisture. Even if you secure your vapor barrier in your crawl space, you are still subject to moisture, because eliminating crawl space moisture is not a 1-step process.
